What does the abbreviation PTFE in the name of a lubricant mean?
PTFE is the short name of polytetrafluoroethylene, also known as fluoroplastic. Another name for polytetrafluoroethylene is Teflon. But that is a trade mark, all rights to which belong to DuPont, so nobody else may use the word “Teflon” in the name of their products without the permission of this corporation. Polytetrafluoroethylene is famous for having the lowest coefficient of friction among polymers; in other words, it is the most slippery. In addition, polytetrafluoroethylene is very chemically resistant and is practically not wetted by water.
What are the features of the protective lubricant?
The protective lubricant is intended not only for lubricating mechanisms but also for protecting them from corrosion. Its formulation is selected so that the lubricant covers the surface of the mechanism in an even layer and forms on the parts of the mechanism a film that protects them from the effects of moisture and other unfavourable factors. Easy application is helped by the carefully selected pressure in the can and the characteristics of the spray head, which give an even directed spray pattern. But the characteristics of the lubricant are not limited to protective functions. Thanks to the polytetrafluoroethylene in its composition the lubricant has excellent anti-friction properties, so it can safely be applied to the moving parts of mechanisms: they will only work better, because friction is considerably reduced. The lubricant is ideal for lubricating locks, door hinges, mechanical drives, telescopic aerials and sliding supports such as seat adjustment mechanisms. The use of the protective lubricant is permissible in any mechanisms working at low and medium speeds under medium specific pressures.
Can PTFE protective lubricant be used for treating bearings?
It all depends on the speeds and loads at which these bearings work. For lightly loaded bearings it may be suitable, but for bearings working at high speeds and loads it is better to use special lubricants, for example white lithium grease with PTFE.
